A Lifeline for the Hunter

Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter has been operating a 24 Hour Telephone Counselling Service in the Hunter since 1966. The service provides the opportunity for people to reach out and speak to another person knowing that they will be heard, treated respectfully and with full anonymity and confidentiality. Our unique position as the "ears" of Newcastle and the Hunter allows us to identify and react to the specific needs of our community.

As an extension of our crisis telephone counselling service and in response to the needs that we have identified in our community, Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter provides Personal Counselling, Financial and Gambling Counselling as well as Community Education Programs designed to enhance living skills and improve self-confidence.

Brad Ure was appointed to the Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter Board in 2003 and has served as Board Chairman since 2006.

Mr Ure has been directly involved in Industrial and Commercial development since 1980 with 25 years experience in Industrial , Commercial and retail Real Estate on the east Coast of Australia.

He has worked for Hooker Corporation and AMP Limited prior to joining Hunter Land in 2000.

He has been a licensed Real Estate Agent since 1980 and is a former Associate of the Society of Valuers and Land Economists

Jan was employed for 26 years as CEO of HSI which supplied vocational training and employment for 100 disabled people

Her background includes accounting having been employed by chartered accountants in Newcastle for 8 years and 3 in London.

Jan is a Rotarian and serves on several boards including Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter, Delando Welfare, Life Activities and Weeroona. Previous board involvement includes WEA Hunter (10 yrs – 4 as chair), Opera Hunter, and Foster Grandparents. She is a trained Lifeline Telephone Counsellor, a Member of Aust. Institute of Company Directors, National Disability Services, holds Certificate IV Workplace Assessor and Trainer and was a recipient of the Centenary Medal for services to disabled people.

Her personal interests include music, cricket, tennis and classic movies. She has a daughter, son-in-law and 3 beautiful grandchildren.

Shirley Dalton is a business systems specialist. She is in demand as a consultant to advise and support CEO’s and senior managers as they work towards improving the operational efficiency of their businesses or sections within them.

Shirley was the Chief Operating Officer for Kip McGrath Education Centres Limited and was responsible for creating and streamlining internal systems and structures which enabled the organisation to list on the Australian Stock Exchange and grow from 250 franchises to over 600 worldwide.

Shirley is a gifted facilitator whose strengths are in identifying opportunities for improvement and communicating these in such a way that the recommended changes can be easily managed. Shirley is known for her friendly and communicative style.

Shirley is also an experienced Executive Coach who holds degrees in Education and Psychology.

Phil was born in country NSW (Gilgandra) in 1958, & grew up in Bathurst & Orange before moving to Newcastle in 1967, where he was educated at Marist Brothers Hamilton.

Phil has been involved in Commercial Banking for the past 30 years, having commenced as a junior loans acceptance officer, for motor vehicle finance in 1977. He has for the past twenty years specialised in Construction & Development Finance area of banking.

Phil’s interests include Rugby, Snowboarding & Surfing. He is currently President of Newcastle & Hunter Rugby Union & has been for the past five years, Phil is also the Chairman of the Hawthorne Club & a current 1st Grade Rugby Referee. Phil played 1st Grade Rugby for Hamilton Rugby Club & represented Newcastle. Since retirement, Phil continues to play Golden Oldies Rugby, having travelled to tournaments in Dublin, Toulouse, Brisbane, Wellington & Edinburgh in 2008.

He is married to Kim (26 years), has three sons, two of whom are chefs.
